School Safety

Cardinal Connections added an elementary school SRO to the existing middle and high school force.  Shawn Jensen rotates among the elementary schools on a six day cycle.  His duties include education, prevention and intervention activities.  Students engage with Officer Jensen in a variety of ways that promote good citizenship.

My name is Shawn Jensen.  I am a South Sioux City Police Officer and I am the School Resource Officer for the South Sioux City Community School District Elementary Schools.  I rotate among all elementary schools: Lewis and Clark , Harney, Cardinal, Covington, E.N. Swett, and Dakota City, spending one full school day at each site every six days.

My responsibilities are threefold: education, intervention and prevention.  My most important function is that of safety.  I am in the schools to protect your children and their teachers.  I am here to provide intervention services whenever safety is threatened.  Through  education on safety, respect, and responsibility, I am also engaged in preventing negative behaviors at school.

My work hours are generally aligned with the school day, but I am available to speak with you or your children at any time.  I can be contacted through your child's school office, the South Sioux City Schools Administration Office or the South Sioux City Law Enforcement Center.  Feel free to call me if there is anything I can do to improve the safety and good citizenship of your child.

Keyless Access and Security Cameras

All schools in the SSCCS District are now protected with a keyless access system.   During school hours, all doors are locked to protect children from unauthorized visitors.  Guests press the button on the intercom, identify themselves, and the state the purpose of their visit.  A video camera provides the office personnel a  visual prior to entry.  An electronic release of the door lock by faculty and a request to please report to the office and sign in completes the access process.  The system can provide the district schools more control over who comes and goes from the building as well as a reliable tracking system. The Aiphones are one more way the SSCCS are ensuring the safety of your children.

After School Programming

After school programming is offered to all school district children to provide a safe and innovative way to engage  students after school hours. The service is contracted through Beyond the Bell.  Programming includes a snack, an academic component, and a recreational component. Beyond the Bell is tailoring the South Sioux City program to include a focus on social emotional learning, subject specific tutoring when required, Cardinal Connections partners in service delivery, and reinforcement for Skillstreaming.

Crisis Response Drills

The schools in the district have documented responses to thirty-seven crises including fire, tornado, severe weather, violence threat, hazardous spill, intruder on campus, crime on campus, and risk of explosion.  Practice drills are held according to a scheduled plan.

Each school has an internal team of trained staff that is responsible for monitoring safety issues at schools and evaluating site drills for efficiency and adherence to documented plans. All sites are compliant with the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) codes.
